Communication Failure
Communication fails in a fairly predictable order during an emergency, and the phone in your pocket is not the last thing standing. Cell networks congest well before they fail outright, and the mains-powered equipment inside the network stops when its own batteries run down, which is typically hours rather than days.
The practical questions are narrow. What will wake you when a warning is issued at night, and what information can you still reach once the network is gone? Both have cheap, boring, well-tested answers.
